Only you can prevent double posting

Last night's super-middleweight world super series semifinal (more concise name not available) was pretty fun. I can't decide whether it lived up to the hype. It wasn't particularly close in the end - I gave groves nine rounds and 117 points to Eubanks' three and 111 - but it was pretty entertaining. It was also unbelievably wild. I've seen cleaner technique in the stands at football games than the final quarter of this world championship boxing match. Nonetheless, it kept things compelling in an otherwise fairly impressive but unspectacular contest. George Groves is clearly the better fighter, but junior was always willing to get in and have a scrap with him. Groves himself endangered his hard earned lead indulging him in a twelfth round bar brawl to close out the fight. The arena was electric and the last two rounds were all action. Had it been a closer fight it could have been proper heart-in-mouth stuff.

On another note, there was a good example of a strange and rare phenomenon at Bellator 194 in Connecticut on Friday night. In mixed martial arts, fighters coming from a specialised discipline will often become very reliant on it, looking very uncomfortable when it's denied.
An odd thing that happens sometimes, though, is a couple of specialised fighters pitted against each other deliberately walling off the best facet of their game because it's also the best facet of their opponent's game. Usually this happens with grapplers. Put a BJJ blackbelt up against a kickboxer, and he will shoot for takedowns like there's no tomorrow. Put him in with another legit BJJ blackbelt and suddenly he's throwing stiff, awkward punches and wobbly low kicks. See, Cindy Dandois vs Alexis Davis. Two legit grapplers having the worst kickboxing match in sporting history.
Trigger warning for awfulness
Image

Friday's event saw a much rarer inverse blackbelt boxing match. Two accomplished strikers - former professional boxers Heather Hardy (20-0-1nc in boxing, WBC super-bantamweight and featherweight IC) and Ana Julaton (14-4-1 in boxing, WBO, IBA super-bantamweight WC) were matched up for a fight in their burgeoning mma careers. Both are very green as mixed martial artists, Hardy going in at 1-1 and Julaton at 2-3 and as a consequence both rely almost solely on their boxing in the cage. They ended up having an incredibly sloppy wrestling match with extended periods of ground time in which Hardy just about managed to look less useless than Julaton to win the decision. I don't have any footage to show, but I assure you it was the grappling equivalent of Ronda Rousey shadowboxing.
Trigger warning again

Smashing the divisional record for most consecutive posts...

Deontay Wilder and Luis Ortiz put on a pretty spectacular show on Saturday night. I wouldn't call it a good fight in the sense that it was good fighting, because it wasn't, but it was a good show with drama and excitement. Wilder defeated Ortiz in the tenth round, while behind on the cards. It was a pretty typical Wilder performance; an iron chin and a heavy right hand carrying the day over a more technical opponent in Ortiz. This fight has pretty much cemented my prediction for a potential fight between Wilder and Anthony Joshua. The windmill couldn't take from Joshua what he took on Saturday from Ortiz. AJ simply hits harder and can sustain more activity. That being said,Wilder reaffirmed an important characteristic of his in this performance. He is well and truly in any of the potential fights he could face. While not the best heavyweight in the world, he's a threat in there against anyone. I wouldn't dare miss the fight, if it happens.

My problem with heavyweight is that it has seemed to regress in recent years, rather than evolving like the lighter divisions. When I watch Lomachenko and Garcia and Crawford, I really feel like I'm seeing the cutting edge of the fight game, guys taking the sport to new heights and new horizons. When I watch Wilder and Ortiz banging it out, I feel like I'm seeing a world champion who would have made a decent sparring partner for heavyweight champs a generation or two ago. No matter how exciting and dramatic it is, it feels weak.

It was the same with UFC 222. One of the things I love about mixed martial arts is that it seems for the most part to be evolving constantly and incredibly rapidly. The featherweight division is a snapshot of changing eras at this moment. Months after Max Holloway dismantled Jose Aldo, Brian Ortega finally cracked the granite chin of Frankie Edgar, knocking him out in the final moments of the first round. Ortega has incredible BJJ, along with smooth striking backed up by power and toughness. He's now set to face Holloway for the title. They are 27 and 26 respectively, and both have proven themselves against the previous generation of elite fighters, as well as their own peers. It really feels like they are the new elite, the best thing to come out of the sport. It's such an exciting thing to watch.
The rest of the card was of a similar theme. Out with the old and in with the new. Cat Zingano (this was a real "wow, is that guy really still fighting?" sort of card) was beaten thoroughly, looking like a hapless time traveller from the last decade against a future contender in Ketlen Viera. Dariush, Pyle, Caraway, and indeed poor Frankie were swept up. It can be bittersweet, watching competitive evolution in real time like this.

I didn't even realize Deontay Wilder was having a fight, all my thoughts are on the lower weight divisions. Feel kind of embarrassed now, can't believe I forgot about it.

http://www.news.com.au/sport/boxing/canelo-alvarez-tests-positive-to-banned-substance/news-story/da8fb1a217d05d58e5dc306a71e0bc1a

MIDDLEWEIGHT boxer Canelo Alvarez has tested positive for a banned drug, and his promoters blame contaminated meat.

A voluntary test showed Alvarez had traces of clenbuterol. A statement from Golden Boy Promotions said the amount was consistent with meat contamination that has impacted athletes in Mexico and China.

Daniel Eichner, director of the World Anti-Doping Agency-accredited laboratory that conducted the test, wrote Monday: “These values are all within the range of what is expected from meat contamination.”

Alvarez is scheduled for a rematch with middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin on May 5 in Las Vegas, a highly anticipated fight after their draw last year.

Alvarez will move his training camp from Mexico to the United States and submit to additional tests, Golden Boy said.

Clenbuterol, often used by asthmatics, has fat burning properties and athletes have been known to use it to help them drop body fat and weight quickly.

Among those who have tested positive for it are baseball players Raul Mondesi and Guillermo Mota, champion cyclist Alberto Contador, and a number of participants in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

“I am an athlete who respects the sport and this surprises me and bothers me because it had never happened to me,” Alvarez said. “I will submit to all the tests that require me to clarify this embarrassing situation and I trust that at the end the truth will prevail.”

Alvarez, 27, of Mexico, and Golovkin, from Kazakhstan, are among the best active boxers. Alvarez, whose given name is Saul, is 49-1-2 with 34 knockouts.

He relinquished his previous belts before meeting Golovkin last September, when Alvarez won on one card 118-110, lost 115-13 on another and third judge had it 114-114.

Well that's embarrassing, makes you wonder though...

Meat contamination, supplements with unlisted ingredients, you need to employ a human guinea pig if you're a professional athlete. Here, you eat this. Either that or kill and prepare your own food. Gather up your own ginseng and mill your own wheat germ.

But imo someone purposely messing with a top fighter's food isn't out of the question. People, especially gamblers, are nuts.

That's why, if you ever become a professional athlete the best diet are meals home cooked by your mother. I think there was a tennis player that said something along those lines but the name doesn't come to mind.

In today's instalment of "things that annoy Anglerphobe about sport fans" we have the combat sports equivalent of the armchair general, a kind of internet tough guy.
People have been making fun of Dagestan's Magomed Ankalaev for dropping his undefeated record along with a huge lead on the scorecards by tapping at the very last second a fifteen minute mma fight against Scotsman Paul Craig, of which he had dominated approximately fourteen minutes and fifty seconds. At the end of the final round, Craig caught an opportunistic triangle choke from the bottom position on the ground and squeezed Ankalaev's head and neck, cutting off blood supply to his brain.
Pictured
Image

Ankalaev tapped in submission at, officially, 14m59s, conceding the fight and a three round lead. Obviously this is huge disappointment, and he will be kicking himself over it, but I've now endured three separate conversations with clueless mma fans in which a guy has implied or outright said that he wouldn't have tapped and that Anakalaev is either an idiot or a wimp.
For any couchweight world champion who knows nothing about what it's like to be in a fight like that or experience that choke to wax hypothetical about what he would have done differently to a professional fighter who actually lived it is uniquely infuriating. I'm not a fighter, but I have been in that choke, and I know how fast the world starts to go dark when an athletic guy is crushing your neck with his legs. You have no thoughts for anything except getting out of it. This with the concentration and pressure and adrenaline of being in the ring for good measure. Ankalaev will, and should, be frustrated at getting caught in an avoidable submission so late after fighting so well, but all the chinless out of shape twats in tapout t shirts who think they would have been more lucid or tougher than he was will miss that entirely, and swear that he should have just held out a second longer.

Another recent example was argument I had with a bjj guy about body shot knockouts in boxing. He seemed to believe that heart and grit are all you need to stay in the fight when your diaphragm is driven up under your ribs by a guy whose job is to punch as hard and accurately as possible.

-Edit for clarity and coherence. Anger has left me unable to write real sentences.

I always figure out there's a UFC fight night on well after it's began or the day after when I see results in the news. They used to heavily advertise them but I guess you're supposed to mark your own calendar now.

Idk if anyone else wishes they had a career in which they could be wildly overpaid for flashes of brilliance. I'm jealous of that $20 million contract (15 guaranteed) that Sam Bradford signed with the Cardinals to play for them next year. He played 6 whole quarters of outstanding football last year before he got hurt. Which is typical for him. In 2013, 2014, and 2017 he missed the majority of the season due to injuries to the same knee. His last head coach described Bradford as having a degenerative knee.

Bradford hopes to be available for the beginning of the season. He is afaik the only quarterback the Cardinals have under contract at this time. $15 million guaranteed for one season. For a player that has never been to the Pro Bowl where the top players are voted in. Never started a playoff game. Never finished a season with a winning record. Incredible injury history. Kirk Cousins got $28 million a year guaranteed for each of the next 3 years. I think that deal looks like a damn good value now.

So, kind of continuing from my point a few posts up about the dire state of the heavyweight division;

There was a big heavyweight fight this evening in London, between British-Jamaican Dillian Whyte (22-1, 17KO-1KO) and Australian Lucas Browne (25-0, 22KO). You wouldn't think it to watch it, but this contest was likely to determine the next world title challenger.
This thing was difficult to watch. Whyte smashed a very sorry looking Lucas Browne in six rounds, landing pretty much non stop throughout the affair. Browne was bloody before the first bell, and barely recognisable by the end of his beating. The eventual finishing blow was a monster left hook that left him motionless on the canvas for a very long time. A worrying amount of time. Even when conscious, he looked really rough out there, but he might be pretty badly fucked up by this. We have seen plenty of times before a fighter catch a brutal knockout loss and never truly recover from it. It has become very uncomfortable to see stuff like this, with two boxing deaths in recent weeks and the ever growing number of CTE cases.
With Whyte's victory comes a wave of punditry calling for a rematch with the only man to defeat him, heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua. The media team which covered this event devoted quite a lot of time to that possibility, and others too are going to be joining them after a dominant victory like this. I highly doubt Dillian Whyte can get a different result against AJ at the second time of asking, but assuming Parker doesn't spoil the party, that will be a very attractive fight for the promoters to make. Never mind that Browne did not look remotely like championship material, this is heavyweight boxing in 2018 and the win will make Whyte a halfway credible British opponent for Joshua, and that means a sold-out arena and lots of headline coverage for the big man while the Wilder and Fury fights are in matchmaking purgatory.

One of the most intriguing mma matches in recent memory is cancelled, just six days before the fight. UFC 223's Lightweight world title fight between Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov is off, following a freak injury to the former's knee. This is the fourth time this brilliant fight has fallen through. Injuries and weight cutting issues have cancelled it in consecutive years since 2015.

It would be a bout between two men on enormous win streaks at the top of the toughest weight class in mma, each among the best ground fighters ever. The crushing bearlike top game of Nurmagomedov against the extremely damaging and dangerous Tenth Planet bottom game of Ferguson is simply must-see stuff. There may have been no better fight to make in the Lightweight division, which is the deepest and most competitive in the sport. Alas.

The situation in the Lightweight division is fairly complicated. For those who want to know, here it is in brief:
Spoiler: show
There has been a Lightweight title for years, but the modern lineage goes back to BJ Penn's capture of the belt in 2008. From BJ, the title was passed down by successive champions Frankie Edgar, Benson Henderson, and Anthony Pettis before coming to Rafael Dos Anjos.
RDA was scheduled to fight then Featherweight champion Conor McGregor at UFC 196 in 2016 but he pulled out due to injury, indirectly bringing about the Mcgregor-Diaz rivalry. While that was going on, RDA was knocked out by "The Hypogean Monarch" Eddie Alvarez, who was then defeated by McGregor, leaving the Irishman with the lineal title after his first (and to date only) contest in the division.
McGregor then ran off for eighteen months to fight Floyd Mayweather, during which time the division continued to tick over. An interim title fight between Ferguson and Nurmagomedov was arranged and fell through because Khabib's weight cut almost killed him, and both were scheduled for new opponents while McGregor remained AWOL with his lucrative boxing and chicken ventures. Meanwhile, a massive stack of top contenders had developed at the top end of the division.
Ferguson defeated Kevin Lee at UFC 216 to claim the interim belt and a presumed title unification shot at Conor McGregor on his return to the sport whenever it ended up being. That bout's failure to materialise, along with Nurmagomedov's victory over Edson Barboza, led to that plan being scrapped and a new undisputed title fight being arranged between Ferguson and Nurmagomedov, meaning that McGregor would be stripped and the old lineage would end. Now that fight has fallen through and the whole thing has sunk back into the mud.

The winner of this fight would have officially become the undisputed world champion, and most likely faced lineal champion Conor McGregor in an extremely lucrative first title defence.
Enter the champion of the division below Lightweight, Max Holloway. He agreed to face Khabib at this extremely short notice to have a chance at becoming a two weight world champion, after missing a recent Featherweight title defence due to being injured himself, and only recently healed up enough to fight. Like Ferguson, he is on a rampant win streak. He has thirteen straight victories stretching back to 2013, when as a 21 year old newcomer he was beaten by a 24 year old Featherweight prospect named Conor McGregor. This whole crazy web of interim and lineal titles and cancelled fights has come full circle to give Max a chance at avenging that loss.
This sport can be pretty silly sometimes.

I was disappointed to see Tony pull out because I really enjoy his ground game. I think Max is in over his head in the grappling department but he's got balls for taking a title fight, not even for his title, with 6 days notice. If Holloway wins then he's gotta be matched with Conor since those would be the two guys to hold both those belts (as the UFC continues to devalue their championships quicker than the WWF post attitude era) recently.

There's a college basketball tournament finale tonight. I might watch it. I used to be really into college ball but for some reason this year I didn't watch any. Like, any. Didn't even fill out a bracket because I didn't know anything about any of the teams except that I still hate Duke.

So Villanova is one of the teams playing. That's a city in Pennsylvania. Close to Philadelphia. So yes, the utility poles are greased. And of course from the article:

When Villanova won the title in 2016, most of the more than 20 arrests were for disorderly conduct. But Flanagan said at least four people were arrested for assaulting police horses.

What I'm hoping for is either Max or Khabib missing weight and then winning, thus making themselves ineligible while Conor and Tony are stripped to leave Lightweight with zero champions, which will set up an old fashioned grand prix tournament to sort this mess out. Khabib, Max, Conor, Tony, Alvarez, Poirier, Pettis, Gaetje, Felder, Kevin Lee, Nate, Ortega, Aldo, maybe Donald Cerrone and Gunnar Nelson or anyone else who can make weight if they want in on it. The ultimate Lightweight grand prix for the modern era.

I know it won't happen, but I like fantasising about it.

April 2018 is shaping up to be a good month for fight fans.

On the First, we lost Ferguson versus Khabib due to injury.
A day later, the same fate met Condit versus Brown.
On the Third, the rematch of Canelo versus GGG was officially called off because of the NAC.

Edit: And today news breaks that Conor McGregor and his SBG team smashed up a bus as it left the UFC 223 media event, injuring UFC Lightweight Michael Chiesa with broken glass from an object being thrown through the bus window. The extent of Chiesa's injury isn't clear, but his fight with Anthony Pettis is in danger and Featherweight Artem Lobov (a member of the SBG team) seems to be out of his undercard fight on Saturday. This month continues to deliver.

As a small silver lining of the last one, this might mean that the rematch will be re-booked somewhere other than Nevada, which can only be a good thing. GGG deserves better than the NAC anyway, after the colossal kick in the balls they delivered to him in the first fight.
Additionally, Tony Ferguson is apparently going to keep his belt after all, meaning that there will still be a unification bout in 2018 and a potential fifth attempt to book the Cursed Fight if Khabib is victorious. That being said, I never realised how much I want to see Holloway versus Ferguson until now.

The extent of Chiesa's injury isn't clear, but his fight with Anthony Pettis is in danger

I only really wanted to see 3 fights on this card. Rose and Joanna, Tony and Khabib, and Chiesa against Pettis. The way things happen with injuries I'm glad one of those fights is still scheduled.

Wait, wait, wait. Did I just watch a video posted by Felice Herrig showing Conor doing that? Hmmm, who is her employer? I've been telling my wife to watch Conor chase that WWE gold now that he's got a big bank account. I guess since he's a rich white foreigner he doesn't have to fear Trump and the alphabet boys so the NYPD won't touch him either. That's a textbook pro wrestling angle. He'll be billed as being too "tough" for "real" fighting, a maniac who is so swoll he can attack buses full of "real fighters" and Undertaker can come out and say he'd have gotten off the bus and tombstoned Conor straight to hell and boom we've got a Summerslam Main Event son, only on PPV.
