Sports section?

Discussion, in general

Germany have been eliminated after a shocking loss to South Korea. England, meanwhile, go up against Belgium tomorrow. While we won't be eliminated if we lose, I think that will serve as a major litmus test - if we win it, I actually don't think it'd be beyond the realm of reason that England could go on to win the whole thing. Crazier things have happened lately, after all.

The World Cup curse strikes again. France won in 1998 and was eliminated in the group stages in 2002 without scoring a single goal. Italy won in 2006 and was eliminated in the group stages in 2010 without a victory. Spain won in 2010 and got eliminated in the group stages in 2014. And now Germany.

This is their worst result in the World Cup since 1938 (please no World War II jokes, I already heard more than enough for a lifetime).

That Korean goalkeeper is a hero. You can probably already buy shirts and hats with his likeness in Mexico.

I don't know if anyone remembers this but in 2015 there was a lot of social media circulation of a video in which a "soccer mom" got viciously knocked out by a professional fighter.

If you don't remember, this is a video of that event.

At the time this seemed like little more than a sad indication of what unscrupulous small mma promotions are doing in their sketchy unsanctioned events, and of the situation of fighters who are compelled to work with them. A completely untrained warm body against someone trying to make a real career of it, and forced to this depressing low to get there. There is a lot of exploitation at this level of prizefighting, and for many aspiring professionals this kind of thing is what they have to do for a while to make it.

This is the winner of that shady casino prizefight as she appeared a few hours ago:

Image

From a 24 year old debutante taking a bumfight in an effort to launch her professional career, Ilima MacFarlane has gone on to win and subsequently defend the Bellator MMA women's flyweight world championship. She is also EBI brazilian jiu-jitsu champion as an accomplished student of tenth planet. I find it a pretty heartwarming story. She got exposure from being the B side of a viral video, and subsequently picked up by a legit fighting organisation in which she climbed her way to champion.
She picked up the win for her first title defence last night with a very well worked armbar on Alejandra Lara, after dominating generally with her slick tenth planet grappling prowess. This was her third straight submission victory in mma, and her eighth win in a row.

Sadly, there is no information that I can find on the whereabouts of her old opponent.

I haven't heard of this lady before but now hearing her humble beginning to her finally achieving her dreams certainly makes me very happy. She earned that belt, hopefully her career continues to be a success.

As for her old opponent? I presume she is continuing her great journey raising her children, hopefully with great success too.

I really like Ilima. In addition to being a good fighter she is an admirable person. She generally seems very honest about who she is. I particularly appreciate her candour about her past and acknowledgement of the huge break Bellator gave her. There is also the scholarship programme she set up with her prize money from winning the belt. It's hard not to like a humble champion who keeps their perspective and puts their success back into their community.

Belgium v. Japan - now that was some game! I watched it with my father and my brother. Me and my dad are mostly neutral, while my brother supports Belgium, but we were all shouting in joy at the end.

NBA Hot Stove:

LeBron goes to the Lakers but more importantly imo Boogie Cousins goes to the Warriors. Lock in your Western Conference bracket right now, the W's are going back to the finals. Once again they upgrade their only position of need.

England v. Colombia - I guess the universe needs balance after the Belgium-Japan match...

Incredibly happy about England getting through, even if it did have to be on penalties (of course, that in itself is a triumph as the English national team has a solid track record of losing penalty shootouts). Even if I wasn't supporting them (which I think I now am - at the start of the tournament I was actually rooting for Belgium but that was more out of a pessimism about England's chances), Colombia spent that entire match throwing out some of the most unsporting behaviour I've ever seen.

I agree, I was rooting for England too. But it wasn't a good game.

I think when it came to the actual football both teams were actually playing really well (some of Colombia's other behaviour notwithstanding), but I agree in that, for entertainment value, it definitely wasn't up to par with the second half of Belgium-Japan, and it was definitely lacking the earnest spirit of both teams in that match.

I watched this in a pub full of very excitable English fans. The mentality of the room draws you in even as a neutral in a largely uneventful game. When it got genuinely exciting towards the end I was fully invested. It was pretty amazing when the last penalty went in. Strangers were hugging me.

It's looking increasingly plausible that football may, in fact, be coming home. I'm in a great position right now because right at the start of the tournament I decided I'd be supporting Belgium, and then my home country's doing so well as well, so unless the final turns out to be France v Croatia, I shall be very happy.
