I don't judge, but when the fancy suits cost as much as I've paid for a decent used car...

It's true they cost a lot, but then they are handmade.

Also, they're optional ;)

Drinking is your hobby, isn't it MCF? How much have you spent on booze over the years?

Though I'm not a furry, I have pet birds, which is basically an expensive hobby, and want to breed birds which is a really expensive hobby. But I don't drink, or party, and I probably won't have kids, so if I ever have a job that pays half-decently I'll be able to afford it. And I imagine fur-suits are a one-time expense unless you gain or lose weight; alcohol and bird care are ongoing.

I'm not bashing him. I'm pointing out that different people get their kicks in different ways. For me it's birds, for MFC it's booze, for furries it's dressing up as anthropomorphized animals.

Ok.

Of note: I'm in considerable pain from dental work today and may have misinterpreted this.

One of my best friends since I was a teenager is a Fur (or, he's "into Anthro" as he likes to say). He's been involved with that community for probably 20-25 years. He goes to Cons, reads comics, is active in the art community (as a consumer, not producer), and goes on MUCKs.

So, I am well-versed in the many aspects of the fandom. I've read some books and comics that were for Furs, but I never was really that into it.

Interestingly enough, my friend's Fursona was turned into a comic character by Shawntae Howard in the X-Men rip-off "The Executioners":

While the porn/sex stuff definitely isn't all there is to the fandom, it's still a pretty big part.

There's more than fursuits (and not all furries are interested in suiting), but it's easy to see why people see it as a big thing. And, to be fair, it is :)

Not really. I mean, there is some, obviously, but it's no different to pretty much any other culture or community, in terms of proportions. Unfortunately, the media likes to focus on what forms only a small part of the culture, and make it out to be a much bigger part than it really is.

An image not helped by a tiny minority of furries who spoil it for the rest of us.

You're correct that it's a big part of every fandom. Go to any convention about art, video games, comics, whatever, and you will see a lot of mediocre drawings of female breasts. People who complain about the excess of non-furry breasts are considered feminist killjoys, but it's okay to complain about furry porn because it's outside the mainstream.

Maybe my view is skewed because my friend was big into the sex stuff.

I would be the last person to pass judgement on someone else's idea of a good time. There are some things I won't abide, but furs are not one of them. If that is something that makes someone happy, then I'm all for it. God knows there isn't enough of that in this world.

and, I've been sober for over a month now, which kind of explains the avatar. sorta of glad I did, now.

I'd really love to try fursuiting...if I had a spare couple of grand lying around to spend on a top-quality suit (not even exaggerating, those things are tail-curlingly expensive) although I'd run into the immediate problem of not really having a fursona per se. I mean I have a bunch of anthro characters I like and, like all fictional characters they constitute varying levels of author-insertion, but I don't think I could really describe any of them as my alter-ego (not even the albatross).

Congrats, MCF, assuming that's what you want. A beer now and then is frankly reasonable.

The twelve steps program isn't really evidence-based, and it seems like for a lot of people attempts at complete abstinence lead to a cycle of sobriety and guilt-filled drinking binges.
