The Wakefield Study went unexamined and unreviewed for 12 years before screwing us over with this antivaccine nonsense.

Outright fraud is disturbingly common in scientific research. But even worse is the frequency of studies which are so poorly done they don't prove anything, but get published anyways because they cost a lot of money and the results are interesting if true, a phenomenon which seems to be particularly common in medical research.

I seriously thought this was a joke at first, so I had to google it, but it's true: world famous Sydney Opera house in Australia (big white building, looks like a bunch of orange peels next to each other) banned performances of George Bizet's Carmen. At first I thought they might have an objection to one of the main characters being a bullfighter, but the actual reason is actually more ridiculous and cynical, as (from 2014 to 2016) they got a sponsorship deal with Australian government's health promotion agency, and since the first act takes place in a tobacco factory, the director of the opera company decided to retire from their program one of the world's most renowned and famous works of the genre. The funny thing is at the time, even current prime minister Tony Abbot thought of the move as "political correctness gone crazy".

Fortunately for Australians and fans of the opera lucky to visit, performances resumed once the controversial partnership ended. Incidentally, the overture for Carmen is one of my favorites, and though sadly I couldn't find any recordings at the Sydney opera house, I think this Spanish production featuring a tremendous castanets performance is even better.

There is a suburb of Sydney known as Manly, named by the first governor or New South Wales because he thought the Aborigines who lived there were very manly.

I'm watching the European election results, and it turns out that in the South East England region, there were two opposing candidates with the same name. As these elections use proportional representation, not only were they running against each other, but Alexandra Phillips of the Brexit Party has actually been elected alongside Alexandra Phillips of the Green Party.

TIL New Zealand only has one deadly animal species (the katipō), and it’s not very outgoing.

I think Australia (the country, or at least the TCSer) needs to ship some others over.

(Presumably, the only way to stop a bad guy with a transgender-friendly privacy law is a good guy with a transgender-friendly privacy law, and thus transgender-friendly privacy law rights need to be enshrined in the Constitution as well)

He made all the girls blush and sigh.

TIL that in September of 2017, the US State Department banned American citizens traveling to North Korea without special permission, which will only be granted to journalists and people on humanitarian missions.

I never had any particular desire to travel to North Korea before, but, as a libertarian and contrarian, the ban suddenly makes me want to travel there really badly.

When Trump calls for an amendment banning flag burning, does it make you want to burn the flag?

I think proposing an amendment to ban flag burning is the exact type of thing that would justify burning the flag.

Trump makes me want to burn at least a few flags, just for sanitation reasons.
