Garage door issue

Postby cmsellers » Thu Dec 14, 2017 2:12 am

So I've started having an issue with my garage door, which has broken in such a weird way that I'm not even sure how to google it. So I thought I'd see if anyone here has any advice.

Here's the situation.

  1. Both the remote and wall control will open the door fine.
  2. If I hold the wall control until the garage door is all the way down, it will go down and stay down.
  3. If I let up before it fully hits the floor, it will start to go up again.
  4. It seems to be still on the down cycle when it does that, since I need to hit the button three more times (stop, up, stop, down) to get it back on the down cycle.
  5. When the garage door is up, pressing the remote does nothing. I'm guessing that this is because the remote signal is not a sustained signal even if you hold it.

I don't know shit about garage doors, except don't fuck with the spring on the opener or anything around it. If the spring pops loose, it's under so much tension that can put a hole in your garage wall. You can imagine what it could do to your head or your hand.

Edit: Changed "pressure" to "tension" so it's correct.

I say nuke it from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

Seconding what Windy wrote.

^Basically, but if you loop a metal cable through the spring and tie the ends together, the spring won’t fly apart if it breaks.

(Presumably, the only way to stop a bad guy with a transgender-friendly privacy law is a good guy with a transgender-friendly privacy law, and thus transgender-friendly privacy law rights need to be enshrined in the Constitution as well)

From what I've read if it's not the sensors or track that are misaligned/obstructed then it might be the down force that needs adjustment.

So it turns out that a piece of wood had fallen in front of the sensor. Also, I apparently have a large piece of wood in my garage. I should make a totem pole or something.

Maybe because I've only ever had driveways or street parking or doorless garages but this is the first thing that popped into my head when I read garage door issue, so stay away from catflaps.
