shit.
I gotta get to the gym.
oh, and we took a walk around her neighborhood this weekend. she's 5'5" (165cm), and I'm taller. I had trouble keeping up with her pace for a minute or so.
I'm not doomed, but I really need to get started.

What's a 5k? (Good luck, I'm sure you'll get fitter in no time with the proper motivation and if you put your mind to it).

5k = 5 kilometers

Good luck, mancityfooty!

Oh... 5km!!!

This isn't directly a fitness related question, but it's related. I've been working out hard at the gym for a couple months now, and my HAIR has started growing back on my face. Could this possibly be related? I have PCOS, a condition which causes too much male hormones and has excessive hair as a symptom. I'm taking medication to treat it, which was working until now. Strength training creates testosterone, right? Is it possible I'm exercising too much? Exercise is a good treatment for PCOS because a lot of the symptoms are obesity related, but I want my face to go back to NORMAL.

Testosterone levels do rise slightly after exercise-but they do not stay elevated.

Problem is, all the studies have been done on men so I don't have any research really on T or other hormone levels in women after exercise or weight training.

What suggestions do you guys have for excelling the beep test (shuttle run), I neglected my legs by just sitting (and before my gym closed last year the quality of my sparring partners decreased so much that I could casually spar without bothering to jump rope or caring about my fitness). Anyway instead of working on my legs I focused on body weight exercises such as push-ups, sit-ups and pull-ups.

Anyway, I tested myself on the beep-test a few days ago and I only got 4.5 (first go) so I have been forcing myself to start training more so my weakness becomes my strength. My goal is to double that score (8.5-9) by the end of the month, so what suggestions do you guys have?

With my current fitness I have been doing some running/walking with the dog and skipping two 5 minute rounds (30 seconds paced and 30 seconds fast as I can) in my work boots and I plan on gradually increasing it and shorten the break times between those two rounds skipping (normally I wait until I stop having a heart attack in the Australian summer, but I'd prefer if my breaks can be decreased to half a minute and increase the amount of rounds).

So now I may have actually started to establish a gym habit, I feel like I have something to add to this.

HIIT has made a colossal difference to my endurance and ability to survive jujitsu warmups. At the gym, I've been on the cross-trainer for 20 minutes a session. Every 30 seconds is comprised of 10 seconds going steady and 20 seconds speeding up. I also do an interval-style rolling hills programme on the step machine, and occasionally on the treadmill. It takes longer to tire me out now, and I can quickly jog or even run for short distances without running short of breath. Here's to hoping I can survive v-circles without needing to puke now.

One of my favourite core and upper body conditioning exercises is the plank (on my elbows/forearms) before moving up to my palms and doing a press-up, before going back down on my elbows/forearms. I do this five times for two sets.

And leg balances (specifically harai and hane goshi entry style stances) work wonders on the arse muscles.

Can I just ask here why you're running in your work boots? There's no guarantee it will ruin your knees, but running in heel-heavy footwear like that isn't going to be doing them any favors, either.

I thought this was an interesting video. Eddie Hall is a professional strongman and currently holds the world record for a strongman-style deadlift of 1,102 lbs.

So I've really slacked off for the past month or so. I haven't gone to the gym at all since I went skiing a couple weeks ago and I was more sore and tired that I've been in many years. I'm glad I went though, I really, really, really like skiing and it sucks that being out of shape has kept me away from it for like the past several years. I'm going to the gym tonight though and I hope to get back into a routine again.

The reason I'm posting here is because I just got diagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome. The thoracic outlet is a space between your clavicle and rib cage, where a major vein, artery, and brachial plexus (nerves) pass through. The syndrome causes this area to get compressed, which means my arm sometimes goes numb and I can even stop getting blood in my arm, which doesn't seem right. This explains why I keep having to go to physical therapy for my shoulders/neck/arm, and why I can't wear an ordinary purse without pain.

At the recommendation of my physical therapist I stopped doing heavy exercise on my arms because it was probably just making my tendonitis worse. I wonder if the thoracic outlet syndrome is also a factor, and I wonder what exactly I can still do safely. It's hard to tell. I'm seeing a specialist but not for a month. I can definitely still do my physical therapy exercises and I should be doing those much more consistently. If I can make my muscles less tight and more strong I might be able to fix this issue without surgery. If I got surgery it would mean removing a rib, and I'd rather just keep my rib.

The good news is if they take your rib they can use it to fashion a spouse for you.

I'm pretty neurotic about back injuries. I'm careful with all of my workout techniques, I do my research on them and I try not to overexert in any area. Despite this, I hurt my back somehow. My leading theory as to how it happened is that I stepped out of a bath awkwardly. The injury is not too serious, fortunately, but I am pretty miffed. It's really astoundingly debilitating. I can't work out properly, I can't get in and out of my car in any kind of dignified manner, fucking stairs are arduous, it's balls.

It reminds me of a story Stipe Miocic told in an interview once. He returned home from defending his UFC title (I think it was the JDS fight last summer) and fucked his back picking up his dog. A tiny furball did more damage to him than one of the most dangerous athletes on the planet. Miocic, who could beat up anyone in the world on a good day, has said an average guy would stand a fair chance against him if they fought after he had been mowing his lawn, because his back is so war-torn. He was probably being facetious, but still. Big, active individuals live in constant fear of back injuries.

I have gone soft around the midsection, nowadays when I punch it the darn thing hurts. I'm not happy about that, I miss being like granite.
