I'm pretty sure this level of pretentiousness is a war crime.

He's an artist making anti-capitalist art. What did you expect it would be?

I find the sentiment to be hyper dramatised and obviously a caricature of reality, but I kind of think that's the tone the artist was going for. I don't know enough about the person to know if this was the intent of the work or not, but if it was, I think it's a legitimate design decision intended to communicate the vehemence of his feeling about the exploitation of the poor by business.

I've seen a LOT of art like this. It very rarely impresses me at all. I'm sick to death of this art about how people use cell phones. Yeah, I get it, people use cell phones a lot. Shut up, I like my phone.

Yeah, his choice to hate capitalism or whatever is legitimate, he's just not that good at it.

I don't always hate this sort of art though. I ran across this recently and thought this guy was clever.

Like, look at the image of the guy using Facebook as a periscope. It doesn't fucking bulldoze you with the message, it's subtle and interesting. It actually makes you think about people looking at the world through the lens of Facebook.

For all their complaining, they never seem to be against these things. This sort of art is statement without the statement. Are these people really so offended by the fact that people drink soda or use the internet? Are they really against the fact that people live in cities?

What's the argument? That there shouldn't be technology or civilization? That people shouldn't have any trade of any sort? That people shouldn't eat food or trust anybody ever?

If any of you have a minute to read the comment section on that page, I advise you to do it. I feel much better about myself having done so.

There are few things in this world more distasteful than a hipster artist.

To his credit, Steve Cutts' artwork perfectly captures what it's like to be ranted at by student socialist. Although somehow, I don't think that was the intention.
On the other hand, I thought the art of Pawel Kuczynski (the artist Tess linked to) was actually very clever - how to do modern protest art right.

This is so cringey it almost loops back around to being a parody of the counterculture.

Almost. It mostly falls under "so bad its horrible" rather than "so bad its good". I mean, fucking hell, 14-year-old me was a dumbass, and I think even his eyes would be rolling.

Mr. Cutts, kindly stop reminding us that anti-commercial art can be just as rote, trite, and creatively bankrupt as any bottom-rung ad campaign.

I don't mind anti-capitalist art, but this is so heavy-handed and obvious and sneering. It's that guy in the back of your art class who wears a trench coat and groans that we're all just goddamned sheep, MAN, and we don't understand the nuance of his thought process because he is just TOO DEEP FOR OUR LEVEL.

Basically, that guy who thinks he's smarter than he is but has built his entire persona on being smarter than everyone.

Also reminds me of a lot of people's criticisms of Banksy, but Banksy isn't really this blunt as far as I can tell.

EDIT: Okay, so I went to his Facebook page and saw this piece that's not in the article and Jesus Christ, this dude is just fucking lazy.
