A1 Steak Sauce.

I'm imagining General Grant and General Lee in the same room arguing over terms of surrender. Some dude kicks in the door holding a bottle of A1 steak sauce, he busts out singing:

"We are the lions, we are the chosen
We gonna shine out the dark
We are the movement, this generation
You better know who we are, who we are"

And that's how we freed the slaves.

You know what they say about necessity being the mother of invention. War is known to be a source of scarcity, which forces people to become resourceful, and sometimes that leads to interesting recipes. Just like Fanta was invented by German Coca-Cola bottlers during WW2. There's also always people willing to profit from human suffering, and wartime happens to be an excellent time for such people both in the private sector and the military industrial complex.

But mostly, A1 was actually first produced in the 1820s. In the UK. So that whole thing doesn't sound so relevant, nor your story plausible...err, not that it was supposed to be nothing but a joke, but you know what I mean.

It's the song from that controversial Pepsi commercial with Kendall Jenner.

Steak sauce goes really good with a good steak, regardless of what steak snobs think.

My GF is a steak snob, but she cooks them herself. I take mine medium to medium rare. She takes hers rare She's so glad I don't take them well done. I tried well-done once and didn't like it. Waste of $20. She outlaws steak sauce, which I'm ok with, but she's ok with steak sauce being used for burger and BBQ meat. So our household uses steak sauce for non-steak meat products.

I need to eat some steaks with a somewhat snobbish person, because I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to steaks.

He made all the girls blush and sigh.

1. It wasn't the whole country that was at war. New York/Philadelphia/Boston were untouched.

2. A1 is gross, Heinz 57 is the only acceptable steak sauce.

3. If you want to add flavor to good meat, try a dry rub or light marinade before you cook it. That way you aren't covering up the meat flavor so much.

Lawry's seasoned salt. I started adding that to my hamburgers and steaks and now nothing else can compare.

The A-1 with Tabasco in it is amazing.

I like A1 mixed in a burger more than I do with steak. Steak only needs salt and pepper to reach full potential.

I'm not just a steak snob, I'm a barbecue snob. I don't think BBQ should have sauce on it either. (And it does have a sauce, it should be eastern Carolina style: vinegar-based and hot, none of those Mississippi Valley sweet ketchup sauces.) Which is how traditional Texas barbecue was done, and why most Texas BBQ is still made with amazing dry-rubs, even though sauces are always available for the sad little people who need them.
