Best game sound track?

Postby The Enginarr » Sun Apr 21, 2013 2:03 am

I was listening to the soundtracks of a couple of games and was wondering what people considered to be the best soundtrack to listen to while not playing the game?

While NOT playing the game?
That's tough . . . Skyrim always makes for good listening. I haven't run into a single social situation that couldn't be improved with a Norse chant of Dovakhin.

Oh man, I will put up with a lot of shit if I think the soundtrack is awesome. I couldn't give you a best, because I'm an indecisive bastard, but I can do top 5.

In no particular order,
Neir
Bastion
Jamestown
Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP
Final Fantasy X

While not playing the game.... the GTA games have to take the cake. They always have a great selection from whatever period the game is set in. Same with the Fallout games for fifties music.

I like the battle tracks from the Total War games when I work out. There's one particular track, "Melee Cafe" in the Rome: Total War soundtrack that really stands out.

I love the music from Fallout 3, but also the soundtracks from Deus Ex Human Revolution and Red Dead Redemption have gotten quite a few listens too. Ooh and the music from the game Fez is pretty cool aswell. And my all time favourite- Chrono Trigger. That shit gives me goosebumps!!

I love the music from Fallout 1&2 and Planescape: Torment (most of which is by the incomparable Mark Morgan), especially for reading/writing music. The Arcanum soundtrack is also great (it sounds very similar to the soundtrack from There Will Be Blood, which I also like) for reading/writing. I like the Portal 2 soundtrack, but it's too claustrophobic for most comfortable reading... although it served as the perfect soundtrack to reading House of Leaves. I also like the music from Fallout: New Vegas... the stuff they play on the radio.

All the Fallout games have fantastic music. Not only are the old songs appropriate for the retro future setting but the juxtaposition between cheery old songs and an irradiated post-apocalypse is both funny and intensely creepy at times.

Devil May Cry 1 also had a great soundtrack. Very creepy and gothic.

My favorite game music is the piano versions from Final Fanstasy IX.

I second the Bastion soundtrack and throw the Mass Effect 3 soundtrack into the mix. It works perfectly in-game and it's pretty damn good (if not slightly depressing) out of game too.

Fallout 3 for Three Dog. Mr. New Vegas was too creepy for my liking. Portal 2, especially Robot Waiting Room #4. The bestest of the best though has to be Sword & Sworcery EP.

Here's a playlist for it. The Maelstrom is my favorite, I think.

Wow, I think I need to play Sword and Sworcery EP again.
Personally I also am a fan of the soundtrack for Bastion and also the soundtrack for the game Edge.

An example of the Edge soundtrack is:

Most of it is similar to this.

Skyrim, Journey, Guild Wars (really anything by Jeremy Soule), and WoW (but only Vanilla and WoTLK).

Seriously, Jeremy Soule is awesome, and he's composed all the Elder Scrolls since, I think, Morrowind, as well as both Guild Wars games.

Man, so many games with good music. On one hand, I wanna say hands down 'Shadow of the Colossus' has THE best music. http://youtu.be/0yv04c6bpMY

On the other hand, Final Fantasy has such awesome music that people like to write songs over it.
