What do you listen to?

Just turned off Pandora, had Michael Jackson playing because Jr really likes his music. There was a nice mix of MJ, Prince and Stevie Wonder on the station. They did play Stayin Alive but I nixed that asap.

Yo, I loved Saturnz Barz from Humans (Seriously, listen to that song), but I've been hooked on possibly one of the most manic and demented (in like...a non-edgy way) songs I've ever heard. Like, this is the song that plays on repeat as you swiftly descend into madness (although Out of Body was pretty acid-trip, too):

"Yellow Rose of Texas"

It was originally about a "high yellow" mixed-race woman, but the lyrics were changed when white people started singing it, and the politically correct (for the time) version is the only one I can find nowadays.

ETA: And this is a version with another set of lyrics. I also like the musical arrangement better.

I generally consider myself nonmusical (with the exception of showtunes, which I memorize in their entirety), and have basically never had favorite artists or really listened to music just for the sake of it. Sort of like sports, I've never been able to put myself in the place of people who enjoy it as a hobby. I'm not saying I hate music or anything, I'll put on the "Oldies" spotify station sometimes if I'm doing something on the computer that doesn't require concentration, and I don't have a podcast to listen to, I have just never pursued any kind of interest in it.

I used to think that I despised the song "Down by the Water" by The Decembrists, back when I worked in a supermarket Deli and heard it about twice a day on the in-store radio. It was just at the right volume where you could only make out every fourth or fifth word and the most distinctive sound was harmonica wailing. Then the other day, I was walking by a community picnic on my way to a different job, and a small band was performing it. I was a little struck, I recognized the tune, the lyrics seemed to match, but it felt like a completely different song. It actually got stuck in my head, in a positive way.

Then last night I decided to google it to give the studio rendition another shot, and it blew me away. Free of distortion, sound correctly balanced, adequate volume, it's a hell of a song. I'm currently working my way through The Decembrist's discography. I think I've done it, I've found a current band I like.

I'm thumbing you because that's an interesting story. It sort of reminds me of how I was playing a Don McLean album and my cousin liked it and asked who it was. She didn't recognize the name until I told her his most famous song. She'd once worked at a place with a jukebox, and couldn't believe that this was the same man who had subjected her to "American Pie" several times a day.

I don't actually like this song, and though I don't dislike it either, it's not something I'd seek out, something true of a lot of their discography. Therefore, "O Valencia!" remains the only Decemberists song I actually like.

It would seem that there are few things I have been able to enjoy, lately. But...damn.

Picked up on Cold Specks recently after hearing a song on NPR, and since I love me some soul (though, like a lot of music today, it also sits in a couple other genres), I picked an album up:

Google Play recommended August Burns Red's new album to me, and while I haven't gotten through the whole thing yet, this song, The Frost, stood out to me

Also, question for the metalheads, does this count as metal?

JamishT was a heck of a guy,
With a devilish twinkle in his eye.
With his hand-picked flowers,
And his feel-good powers,
He made all the girls blush and sigh.

Sounds like metalcore to me. I looked the band up and their wiki page says they're metalcore too.
