Excellent Orchestrals

What do you listen to?

Excellent Orchestrals

Doesn't have to be classical music, just good and by an orchestra.

Aida- The trumpet solo from the Grand March. You can probably guess what game exposed me to it.

Tocatta and Fugue, by the amazing Philidephia Orchestra. You really do need the record to hear its true glory though.

The Beautiful Blue Danube, byt the Philly Orchestra, but in 1919! Due to the styles and technological limitations of recording at the time, it is a very fresh version of it.

Sergei Prokofiev - Dance of the Knights

I've liked this one ever since I first heard it as a teenager in music history class. It's always the first thing I think of when someone asks about classical music. Makes me want to see the ballet it's from too.

Camille Saint-saëns - Danse Macabre

And another dance I guess. The cheery dance of death!

Claude Debussy - Sirenes

Prélude à l'Après-midi d'un faune

These ones are just magical.

Rimsky-Korsakov - Scheherazade (1st Movement)

Actually go listen to the whole suite. :P

Alban Berg's Violin Concerto, the last piece he ever finished. Not my favourite version (that would be Frederieke Saeijs' rendition), but this one can be found in just one video instead of three.

Gah, thank you, I've been asking after that one off-and-on for years as "the one from Romeo and Juliet where they're dancing, the cool one, not the one that plays when Sims kiss."

Allow me to de-class this joint with one of those Japanese orchestras that takes Japanese teen media dead seriously:

And a soundtrack piece that I still adore well after I grew stale on the movie it's describing:

This is pretty much my favorite classical.

ALSO BEETHOVEN.

And my favorite film composer is Jerry Goldsmith. I have a bunch of his stuff in my itunes, even though I haven't seen most of the movies he wrote them for.

I really like classical music. It's something I should seek out more of. I usually just listen to rock music because that's what I find on the radio and none of my buddies ever want to hear classical.

Last but not not least, we can't forget Philip Glass.

James Horner died today. I'm not that familiar with his work, but I guess a lot of people liked him even though he's responsible for the Titanic music. Anyone know if he did any nice work?

One of my favorite film scores is How To Train Your Dragon, actually:

And I feel ready for anything if I'm listening to The Dark Knight Rises:

Those two are the main soundtracks that play on Pandora's Film Scores Station, besides Enya.

Will you accept string quartets? Not an orchestra, but cousins at least.

These guys, the Danish String Quartet, are completely amazing. I have this album and listen to it all the time. It's at times upbeat and melancholic, but always beautiful:

I'd love to know if there are any other groups out there like this. For some reason the music really grabs me.

God keep Francis the emperor,
Our good Emperor Francis!
Long live Francis the emperor,
In the brightest splendour of happiness!
May sprigs of laurel bloom for him
As a garland of honour, wherever he goes.
God keep Francis the emperor,
Our good Emperor Francis!
