If this has already been listed, I'm sorry but I'm playing it again, 'cause Trace Adkins makes country music sexy:

Personally, I feel like country music took a wrong turn with Garth Brooks. He made it immensely popular by taking out everything except the steel guitar and the cowboy getup and a lot of people stood up and said: "pop music about trucks, now there's country music I like." "Country" radio stations and record labels took notice, and made the shift from real country to pop country without changing the name.

As someone who grew up on folk music, and thus got into country through Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings, I'm amazed that modern "country" stations have the gall to use the label. There's still country music made, but you certainly won't hear it on those stations.

I find that a helpful rule of thumb for post-Brooks music is to look at the album cover. If a male singer is wearing a cowboy hat and showing chest hair, or if an album featuring a female singer resembles a Ralph Lauren ad, it won't be real country music you hear on the album itself.

In fact, it brings to mind a Conway Twitty song..

For that matter, I think humor is an essential element to real country music, as demonstrated by Hank Thompson

Mary Chapin Carpenter

And of course Old Hank himself

Did anybody watch the How I Met Your Mother finale?

This is the song that I think they should have played when

I like weird indie nu country/folk/anti-folk/post-folk which I guess counts?

I also enjoy bluegrass, particularly if it's Steve Martin.

How about some nice covers of country standards?

Leo Kottke on Johnny Cash

Waylon on Kris

And the Highwaymen on one of their own (Johnny again)

I'm not a big country fan, but I've been really into The Handsome Family lately. (You can guess once where I first heard about them, because once is all you need...) Their music is mostly reminiscent of old country, but not entirely the same, I think. Some of my favorite songs by them:

If someone here knows any country acts/songs similar to this, I'd love to hear it.

This song captures my very essence, I never could figure out why though.

Anyway I always liked this song...

I'm noticing a shortage of Western on this "Country AND Western" thread.

I have a hard rule that I don't post more than six pictures/videos on one post (I try not to post more than four), which makes this wicked hard.

So let's start with some traditional Western songs by traditional Western artists.

Gene Autry - "Red River Valley"

Roy Rogers and Sons of the Pioneers - "Bury Me Not on the Lone Prairie"

Marty Robbins - "Ribbon of Darkness"

Tex Ritter - "Streets of Laredo"

Did you guys know that Ella Fitzgerald did a version of "Don't Fence Me In"? (I didn't, but it's awesome.)

Now for my favorite of the new Western songs:

Don Edwards - "Coyotes"
