South Africa's answer to Ke$ha

Postby DamianaRaven » Sun Sep 28, 2014 2:08 am

Die Antwoord (which is Afrikaans for "The Answer") is a hip-hop band from South Africa. They're kind of like Kesha in that they often act somewhat... low-brow in their performances but it's apparently just that - a performance. In any case, I think their music is quite original, at least to my ears. I like the way they blend English with Afrikaans and some kind of slang-jabber. This will help if you have trouble following. It's rather catchy. Now, the videos are... well, you'll probably have to watch them two or three times to figure out what the fuck you just saw. They aren't pornographically vulgar or anything, but it is explicit and should be viewed with discretion.

JamishT was a heck of a guy,
With a devilish twinkle in his eye.
With his hand-picked flowers,
And his feel-good powers,
He made all the girls blush and sigh.

I've liked this group for a long time. Unlike Kesha, however, they are a bit more closer to the personas they have on screen. They are pioneering a culture known as zef, which they basically created. The closest I can come to it in popular vernacular is "new rich" or a sort of feigned wealth. From a Tree Grows in Brooklyn, you know, that idea that spending money you don't have to look more wealthy can lead you to wealth? But you don't have the character in place to wear your new rich rags well, so you just come off as silly but with a sort of drained dignity.

Whatever the case, I think Yo-landi is just ridiculously adorable, even with that bizarre haircut. One thing I'm curious about is whether performing in "blackface" is considered offensive in SA the way it is here. This is how Yo-landi dressed for part of their "Fatty Boom Boom" video. I'm not 100% sure, but I think if white rapper wore such a costume in the US, all the shit would hit every fan. This is not to say they're doing ANYTHING wrong if South African etiquette doesn't consider it offensive - it's just something about which I'm curious and fascinated.

South African here. Jack that's not quite what zef means. Zef is a low culture, low income style, usually related to what you guys would call white "trailer trash" (and sometimes coloured as well). You know, the type of people who would rather put side spoilers on their '76 Datsun than buy their kids new clothes. However it's true that some people try to boost their image through dubious means. They didn't invent zef though. Both the word and concept has been around since I was a kid and a lot longer.

Die Antwoord are hilarious because their vids are weird and people barely know what they're singing about.

It's all performance art though. Both of them are really smart and well educated, and believe it or not Yolandi is a reverend's daughter.
(Though of course I've dated my share of reverend's daughters and that's another matter entirely)

I love the word dwanky. It means "lame, retarded" a derision along that vein. The sound of it is just perfect for what it tries to convey - a sort of silly, almost childlike impudence. The internet can't seem to decide of the singular is dwanky or dwankie. I'm almost certain Vimes would know.

I wish they pushed out more content. I love her voice. Their kid makes a reappearance in this video I see. That has got to be one fucked up little youngster.

Some people on irc have asked about zef music. No I'm not gonna play any of Die Antwoord's Afrikaans songs here because those are all super vulgar (I like them but if you understand the language they can make a sailor blush). Their English songs are much easier to listen to and easy to find.
Die Antwoord (The Answer) isn't the only act that plays the celebration of zef culture music though. Others have gotten into the act. Jack Parow for example has been around for a while too. This is one of his more radio friendly songs.
"Jy dink jy is cooler as ekke" ("You think You're Cooler than Me" in English).

My favourite line?
I'm original, you're a copy
I'm a flashdrive, you're a floppy

I guess Die Antwoord are going to appear in a crappy looking movie...

It so far looks exactly what would happen if an executive producer watched Robocop and District 9, consumed the essence of those two movies (as executive producers are want to do) and this is the bowel movement it had the next day.

Who knows? It might be good.

Yeah, they're kinda like Rammstein to me. When you understand what they're saying, you can't just appreciate the music :)

Side note: I work with a very upstanding gentleman. He's a straight arrow Catholic who is one of the most decent people I've ever met. He's also exceptionally well respected in the Tax field, and has more consulting clients than he knows what to do with. Anyway, Ninja is his cousin's son. Brian always thinks it's hysterical that his reasonably straight laced family has Ninja in it...
