So obviously hip hop was founded on the principle of "take whatever's lying around and make subversive music with it." Hence you have the turntablists who established the sound early on--they played two records and let a small cut of a song play over and over, alternating between the two records, and established the concept of "beat juggling". Then the concept of recording various pieces of music onto pieces of tape, cutting those out, attaching them together at the ends thus forming a "loop" gained mainstream popularity. The point it, hip hop is a sampler's game. I mean you have the Roots, sure, but still.
So let's do this. Here's this song.
That's "I Walk on Gilded Splinters" by the great Johnny Jenkins. Do you recognize the drums in the beginning? The answer is in the spoiler tags. No Googling!
There's a website called http://www.whosampled.com/, and it will change your life if you love hip hop but have no idea where that music you love came from.
