Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)

I was sold on the concept from the first time I saw Tom Holland's Spider-Man, and then once it was described as reminiscent of John Hughes, but I'm still taken by just how good it looks. The atmosphere is on-point, Spidey is impressive as always, his friend seems like a treat, and Michael Keaton's Vulture -- from what little we see of him -- has the makings of a memorable villain for once (Zemo was great for what he was and Mads Mikkelsen's Wizard Man was slightly above par, but we still need a truly great supervillain other than Loki).

And of course, Robert Downey Jr. is as delightful as always. Surprised his appearance was even shown in the trailer, but hopefully that means he'll have a more significant role than a few cameos.

Couple of heads-up so you know where I’m coming from with this review:

1. This is my favourite Spiderman movie and I really enjoyed it. BUT the other five Spiderman movies aren’t even a blip on my favourite superhero movies list, which I realise is a somewhat controversial opinion for movie nerds. Spiderman 2 is the only one I’ve really liked until now.

2. The last three MCU movies are in my top 5 MCU movies so they’ve had a great run recently. This was a lot of fun but falls more into the middle of my rankings, around Age of Ultron or so.

3. It’s midnight the next night but I’m still hungover from my step-sister’s housewarming party. My brother is unaffected, despite screaming in a Scottish accent for the majority of the last two hours. So forgive any inconsistencies, run-on sentences and glaring moments I forget to mention. At least I have an excuse this time.

The Good
It was cool to see Spiderman’s powers again. They’re one of the coolest to watch on screen and his powers were the most entertaining parts of his previous movies because the originals had decent plots with boring characters and the Amazings had fun characters with nonsense plots. But here the powers complement the movie as opposed to being their saving grace.

Tom Holland is easily my favourite Peter Parker/Spiderman. Tobey McGuire didn’t go two scenes without whining and while I really enjoyed Andrew Garfield, he’s not enough to make me watch those movies again. Holland actually feels like a kid and is really the Millennial of the MCU, with his impatience, enthusiasm and need to capture everything on film for prosperity, which foreshadows any future photography aspirations nicely.

The Vulture was both fun and intriguing, teetering on the edge of insanity and ambition nicely. So basically he was a Spiderman villain. There was the moment at the start of the last act where it was revealed that yet again, Peter’s antagonist happened to be the parent of a friend at his school where I started saying ‘really?’ but that scene is one of the most uncomfortably funny ones in the whole movie. The awkwardness was hilarious and it even managed to get back to being tense on the drive to Homecoming. And he even had a nice end-credits scene (the only one I stuck around for) where he believably forgave Peter after he saved his life. If he comes back, I think he’ll probably still be out committing crimes or escaping jail but I think his unfair grudge against Spiderman is gone for now and his secret is safe.

On that last bit, I always loved that right off the bat, the MCU said ‘fuck secret identities’, with Tony saying as much at the end of Iron Man and holding true ever since. But with Peter it makes sense to have him hide because not only is he not an Avenger, he’s not professional or old enough to juggle a public life, high school and Spidermaning. As long as they don't make a habit of Avengers hiding their identity, because that would get old fast, I'm fine with the exception.

My favourite scene is probably the Monument one just because it was tense and fun and basically the entire ferry scene has played out in trailers already. I loved Peter’s suit contradicting everything the tour guide said.

The Spidey suit. Tony completely overthought the capabilities once the training wheels were allegedly off.

Iron Man. Obviously I always enjoy him, but he was in it just enough to give him some development but not take away from Peter’s story.

Peter’s arc. I like that he’s gone from a fanboy who just wants to team up with the big boys to realising he’s still an amateur who has a lot to learn. I did love the amateur superhero stuff, from not being able to find a crime to being the world’s worst interrogator.

The pre-recorded Cap motivational speeches were so corny and fitting but I think the abysmal kid reporters were even funnier. Everything feels childish in the school and reinforces the fact that Peter Parker is a teenager whose out there doing these things, which was not the case when all the high-schoolers looked they were thirty and serious about everything they did.

People are robbing banks in Avengers costumes now. Were Presidents not ironic enough?

Aside from a couple of Iron Man assists, Spiderman got through some tough situations through sheer force of will and learning curves. Like finding his super-strength to push the rubble off him instead of a bunch of random people throwing food at the Green Goblin as a diversion (still one of the most annoying moments in movie history).

Ned and Peter’s friendship provided a lot of laughs. Ned bursting to tell everyone, wearing his mask and even shooting a guy all in the name of being buds with the webslinger.

“I… was… watching… porn.” – Ned failing to come up with a less incriminating lie as he was saying it.

“You can have the room next to Vision’s. He’s not a fan of doors.”

“Did you get expelled and have to go to that school across town where the principal has a crossbow?”

“It’s always good when none of your students are killed on a school trip. And I’m glad that didn’t happen again. [/butchered quote]

“What the fu-”

The Bad
Why is it called Spiderman: Homecoming? He ditched a girl at a dance and that's enough to make a title out of it? They'd have been better off calling it Spiderman Goes to Washington. More happens there and it has more impact on the plot than a 20 second dilemma. If the climax happened at a Homecoming parade or football match or something - I only know homecoming from what I've seen on American TV shows so forgive me if I'm getting Homecoming events wrong (Is it important enough to be capitalised or not?) - then it would be warranted but as it is, it just feels like a tease that never pays off. I guess the title could be an analogy for Peter Parker coming home after fighting alongside Avengers and getting used to being a nobody again but that's head-canon at its most desperate.

So the popular girl is not Mary Jane but there is an unpopular girl whose schtick is she has no friends who turns out to be called MJ? Why? Odd choice.

Tony Stark was mad because Peter was barely able to keep the ferry together after going head-forward into danger cops had an outside chance of stopping and being directly responsible for the ship going down. Tony Stark forgave Peter when he was barely able to stop a plane from destroying New York skyscrapers after going head-forward into danger cops had an outside chance of stopping and being directly responsible for the plane going down. I mean, I’m on Spiderman’s side and I’m glad you recognise his heroism but from your perspective, has he really learnt a lesson?

Penis Parker. Because Peter is another word for penis. Ha. Aren’t you on the Braniacs board? Come up with a more clever insult.

I don't mind that much because I was just glad to be having fun in a Spiderman movie but there was nothing as gut-punching as Gwen Stacy's death in ASM2 (which surprisingly got me good, despite being a total mess up to that point). There was Peter's first crush moving because of family drama but while I enjoyed their interaction, there wasn't an overwhelming amount of chemistry between them.

I think Nacho’s typecast as a henchman now.

The climax was distractingly similar to the very first Spiderman. Peter’s friend’s dad [practically] kills himself trying to escape to avoid being helped by that Spiderman who’s always foiling his plans. From memory, in Amazing Spiderman, Peter’s friend’s dad had already given Peter a pass and they teamed up since he was a cop and everything and his death was just line-of-duty against Godzilla so that one doesn’t apply.

The Ugly
Tony proposing to his girlfriend as a backup plan. As always, Pepper’s an afterthought in these movies. But Gwyneth Paltrow peaked in Se7en so we didn't need more than that cameo.

It was better than I expected but I’m still more excited for Thor: Ragnarok.

Spiderman movie rankings:
(If it counts since he’s barely in it) Civil War
Spiderman Homecoming
Spiderman 2
The Amazing Spiderman
Spiderman
The Amazing Spiderman 2
Spiderman 3

You left Italian Spiderman off that list.

The others wouldn't have stood a chance if I included that. Or Spiderpig for that matter.

This is a play on words. He's literally going to Homecoming, which emphasizes him being a kid. It's also referring to him "coming home" after the events of Civil War and the consequences of that.

Now that he's back home he's got greater ambitions than just being the "Friendly Neighborhood Spiderman". And that's what drives his actions throughout the movie.

I also think it's a meta joke, since Marsney got their hands on the franchise from, or rather with, Sony. So the character has at Last come home or... something

I saw it on Sunday, and I thought it was pretty good. I haven't been following the Spiderman franchise since the first Andrew Garfield movie (or most other superhero movies that have come out in the last few years, for that matter).

random thoughts
I wasn't expecting Nacho from Better Call Saul to be in it, so that was interesting. I thought it was kind of stupid that Tony Stark seemed surprised when Peter Parker and that other kid hacked the suit, but it led to the scene where he turned the suit down at the end, which I thought was funny.

This has nothing to do with the story, but it was weird to see Michael Keaton after having watched The Founder, where he played a character that was literally more heartless than a comic villain.

(Presumably, the only way to stop a bad guy with a transgender-friendly privacy law is a good guy with a transgender-friendly privacy law, and thus transgender-friendly privacy law rights need to be enshrined in the Constitution as well)
