READ THIS - A Note On Spoilers

Postby HarpingCarp » Mon Apr 15, 2013 7:23 pm

Since we'll be discussing a lot of movies and tv shows it'd be great if you guys could follow this simple guideline for spoilers.

Say "Spoiler" clearly and in bold before starting your passage. Leave a couple of lines after the warning, so people won't stumble upon it easily.

You can add spoiler tags by using the BB code :
Code: Select all
[spoiler]  [/spoiler]

For example:

SPOILERS

Star Wars
Spoiler: show
Darth Vader is Luke's Father.

Kate threatened me to take it down. I need an adult.

Spoiler: show
<Kateness> Carp
<Kateness> Change your damn sig.
<Kateness> Hate Week's over
<Kateness> I swear to God I'll start editing links to your indiscretion with a pirate, in everything.

I'm interested in this as well. My personal rule is that I'll spoil it if it's either extremely twist-y, like say in The Usual Suspects or Primer, or something that came out recently, like an ongoing TV show.

I'm pretty sure I just got a post edited for spoilering
Spoiler: show
the fact that the clone troopers in Star Wars turn out to be the stormtroopers in the old trilogy. But I don't think this was supposed to be a revelation - the clone troopers intentionally look almost exactly like the stormtroopers. I spoilered that part more as a "I'm embarrassed about this".

[broad Star Wars spoiler?]

I understand the need for spoilers - hell, I'm usually the one yelling at people for spoiling Game of Thrones, but I also think that if we have a spoiler tag, we don't need an additional spoiler warning and 10-15 lines. It breaks the flow of a post, and is imo redundant. While I understand that people might unthinkingly expand the spoiler tag and spoil things big time for themselves, what I do is just to put the scope of the spoiler in parentheses above or below the spoiler tag, like [book 4 spoiler], or [season 1 finale spoiler], which both makes it clear that it actually is a spoiler, and broadly what it spoils.

That said, I of course, don't mean to tell you mods how to do your job. Just a suggestion.

You should definitely have the warning as well, the 15 lines maybe not necessary but if someone just comes in and sees a random blank spot and doesn't know what it is, it doesn't do much good if they try to click on it or whatever. Least common denominator is all I'm saying.

What counts as a spoiler?

In some discussion places, it's any details about a show/movie which hasn't aired yet. In others, it's a movie still in theatre release. But for some people it's anything about anything they haven't seen. And sometimes it's just plot, but sometimes it's everything but the title.

I'd say that it's up to your own judgement. As long as you don't reveal big plot developments, it should be okay.

In the worst case, a mod can always be contacted via PM to edit the post and hide potential spoilers. As long as you don't do it on purpose, I don't think any of us will mind.

Jesus was more into people drinking his blood and eating his body.

Also, at the end of Prometheus
Spoiler: show
a lot of people left the cinema disappointed. I only watched it recently but it just seemed to be about supposedly smart people trying to outdo each for 'Most stupid decision in this movie award', Michael Fassbender being sinister (and awesome) and Guy Pearce doing his best impression Old Barney impression.
