Steve Ditko passed away in his apartment on June 29, but the news was only announced today, partly because not many people knew him by name, and because he was a recluse and didn't get many interviews throughout his life.
Along with Stan Lee, he created one of the most iconic characters of pop culture in Spiderman, but he also worked on some of the greatest titles from the silver age of comics, as well as creating many other superheroes, such as Dr. Strange (also co-created with Lee) and most of the Charlton comics characters such as Blue Beetle and the Question, which would go on to be the source of inspiration* for Watchmen, the greatest graphic novel of all time.
Ditko was also an avid follower of Ayn Rand and objectivism, to the point he created many stories based on that philosophy.
*After Charlton went bankrupt, DC bought the rights to their titles and characters, and commissioned Alan Moore to create something with them. When the story was finished, DC realized it was too good to be changed, but it would effectively break their newly acquired toys. It was then that they decided to set the story in a different continuity, and Moore along with artist Dave Gibbons gave the Charlton characters new costumes and identities, and that's how Captain Atom was turned into Dr. Manhattan, Question into Rorschach, and so on.
