I thought Doug was pretty fair in his assessment of the movie. Despite him and his brother's "Sibling Rivalry" video where they both claimed to love the movie, then run through a catalogue of issues with it, he managed to point out where the movie fell down without claiming it was trash, and pointing out where it was good (the Rey, Kylo, and Luke stuff was pretty interesting) without overlooking the places where it was bad. I especially laughed at the lady playing Holdo and her depiction as a harassed soccer mom dealing with a teenage son.

The thing I think I'm getting from this movie is that even when people think they like it, what they take away is a list of complaints and gripes about things that didn't make sense or were badly plotted. I think it's possibly a facet of how the movie was constructed, you never quite fall into it and go with the absurd parts because there's always something jarring you out of it. The humour was the primary thing that did that for me, also the weird design and plot decisions making no sense.

ETA: Here's a really interesting article on a press release from Lucasfilm that suggests that Snoke trained "at least one other apprentice". It's not referred to in the movie, and my spider sense suggests that "other apprentice" might have been Palpatine (making him probably Plagueis but abandoned the Sith Order?) but could be a new character we've not seen.

Well, I just saw the Last Jedi last night. I liked it. It was not perfect, but I still liked it nonetheless. There was one part that made me rise a eyebrow, though.

Spoiler: show
Leia somehow survived the bridge that she was on getting blasted and her being sent into space. I mean, both force shields(it's one of the 1st things Padawans and Sith Apprentices are trained in) and levitation(In legends, Count Dooku once did this, and other Force users have done this too) are not new things in Star Wars, but Leia has as far as we know has never had any training. It kind of made it hard to keep up the Suspension of Disbelief. But still.

I was surprised they killed off Snoke so soon, but he will most likely be back in Episode 9. I hope they explain more about him. If not on Episode 9, then perhaps in of the canon books. We still know next to nothing about Snoke. All we know is that he is indeed stronger then Darth Vader and Darth Sidious, and that's it.

Overall, I liked it, even better then the Force Awakens.

Someone in the RLM reddit pointed out that Poe and Rose should've been combined into Poe and we'd suddenly have a movie that doesn't lose the plot about 50 times for no fucking reason.

I agree. I'm not even one of those obnoxious Poe/Finn shippers because I've always hated Poe. If it wasn't for the advertising, he wouldn't be a lead. He'd be the Wedge Antilles of the new trilogy.

But if they were combined into one character, suddenly so much of the movie starts to make sense.
Spoiler: show
He'd be that bent on destroying the star destroyer, not because he's a hot shot pilot who knows better, but because he was brought up in a family that was directly affected by the first order's funding operations.

The retarded mutiny subplot would turn from two different mutinous actions, one of which culminates in a wink to Leia shooting holes in things she can't get through and literally nothing else wouldn't be needed. It'd be concise. Poe himself heads to the Casino planet to help with the fleet's situation. On his own. It's mutinous because he was grounded. It'd be interesting to see him catch Finn deserting... Again. It'd be an excellent fucking reversal of TFA.

The absolutely tone-killing scene where Rose saves Finn will become a sweet culmination of Poe and Finn's relationship. They don't have to fucking kiss, it'd be good either way. AND it'd involve Poe no longer throwing away lives just as long as the superweapon gets destroyed.

And so, I finally watched it and avoided all spoilers except for that wimpy Gen Y guy being shirtless at one point.

Spoiler: show
I think they missed a trick here.

Admiral Ackbar should have been the one to crash into the Star Destroyer. Imagine...

Hux and the lads are ignoring the rebel ship as it slowly turns around. "Oh, it's just a bluff, silly rebels," says Hux.
Laughs all around. "Oh, wait, looks like its preparing to jump into hyperspace." Hux slowly turns around as Admiral Ackbar comes flying at them. Three words leave his mouth...

"It's a trap!"

I liked the film. My favourite part was the guy who decided to taste the ground on this mysterious new planet because of his crippling salt addiction. The throne room fight was pretty cool too.

Shit forgot this is spoilers

Spoiler: show
Obviously that planet was only filled with the salt from the theorists when Snoke died.

it was still a completely stupid gag for a major character death especially given he's one of those big picture characters that literally cannot be minor because too many motivations are tied to him *ahem*

Spoiler: show
One of my main problems with this movie is Rey's "training" with Luke. I have said a few times in the past that I believe Rey is a Mary Sue, and this movie has not changed that one point. At least when Yoda trained Luke, we see Yoda training him, and that we see it is hard training.

But Luke barely even trained Rey. We never see him giving Rey ANY lightsaber training, and yet she somehow improves that much with little to no training. Even after training from Obi Wan in A New Hope, Luke could barely hold a lightsaber. This is what happened at that time when he went up against somebody who did know how to use a lightsaber(in canon). Image

Image

It was not until he had some very hard training with Yoda before he managed to become skilled and powerful enough to hold his own against Vader(Vader was not being serious, but still), and it took a few years before he got skilled enough to go toe to toe, and even win against, Vader.

While Kylo Ren is not yet Vader's equal, he is supposed to be q powerful and skilled force user, and should be more then a match for a untrained Rey even wounded.
