Horror Manga

Postby skrotkanon » Tue Oct 04, 2016 7:52 pm

(I hope threads about manga is fine here.)

I've been reading Attack on Titan lately but I ran out of chapters so I branched out and read Ajin and I'm now on Tokyo Ghoul. I've also read Uzimaki (NOT Urutsukudoji!) and it freaked me the fuck out.

Do you guys have any other tips for really depressing and creepy manga or just great horror manga?

I think manga is possibly the best medium for horror since it's designed for extreme facial expressions and lets the author go crazy with his ideas. There's no collaborators to muddle anything, you just get pure darkness right on the pages! <3

Its not horror but it is dark and depressing for most but Oyasumi Punpun is a great read. It just released the third volume of the omnibus releases like a week ago.

Sounds like pretty depressing slice-of-life, I'll check it out!

It's not Manga but you could read any Marvel Comic published in the last five or six years, they've all been pretty depressing how far the company has fallen in terms of quality.

Hellstar Remina and The Enigma of Amigara Fault are a must read.

Strongly seconding this. I was thinking of recommending it earlier, but it's so short that I wasn't sure if it counted. It's among the few things that I've read, manga or otherwise, that's left me with a genuine creepy-crawly feeling in my stomach for hours afterward.

The Enigma sounds good to me, length is certainly not relevant. I wish Ajin would have cut down some of the action and focused on the characters and setting instead. I'm gonna have to make a list...

I just read the Enigma of Amigara Fault.

What.
The.
Fuck?

Turns out it's the same guy who wrote Uzumaki, Junji Ito. That dude is not right in the head.

Uzumaki is probably the most fucked up thing I've ever read. And it's 16 chapters long, the horror never ends. ;_;

EDIT: Aaaand he's the guy who wrote Hellstar Remina. I don't know if I can take more of this...

Noooo, Eric! (The bear-shaped hole should have been easy to find though)

I'm going down my own hole now. Started reading Pupa and let me tell you I would probably have done the same as the big brother there. Cherished little sisters is my weak point. Not sure I should continue reading this...

Oh, try checking out Dragon Head. It's sort of like Naoki Urasawa meets Fallout, with some Lord of the Flies mixed in.

It's not manga per se but www.webtoons.com (which is the english naver site) has a ton of horror and thriller webtoons.

Deep is good.

Hive is awesome (not completed yet)

Then you've got the jump scares like Shriek and Chiller.

I started reading Oyasumi Punpun but it's so fucking weird... Reading a bit here and there because I get so exhausted by the weirdness.

But I found this other manga called Renai Kaidan Sayoko-san and it seems fantastic. It's about a girl who can make ghosts possess her to free them, but being possessed by an army of spirits means noone can hang around her.
So it's sad but also really funny because the writers toys with ghost story conventions. There's also dick jokes.
I have a confession to make. I like dick jokes. Please don't hate me!

I also read Parasyte which was like Tokyo Ghoul without all the shonen fighting nonsense, so I obviously liked it.

Right, Tokyo Akazukin too. I feel kind of dirty having read just four chapters...

And checking out Dragon Head soon.

EDIT: Man, Renai Kaidan Sayoko-san is just getting better. Funny as hell really, maybe it's just that instead of it being a bland boy who falls in love with a mysterious girl it's the girl who falls in love with the boy being oblivious. It's ecchi seinen turned on its head and it's really well done!
